Current polls show there is an air of optimism flowing through America. Despite the news about the economy, there is a general feeling that hope has finally arrived in America. Could it be because Barack Hussein Obama is going to be sworn in as the First African-American of the United States? Or could it be due to some other phenomenon that is at this point being overlooked? Perhaps, it is a little bit of both.
One of the biggest stories of the 2008 Election, that was overlooked by many, was the largest outpouring of positive media coverage for Barack Obama. The media swooned when he spoke, fainted at the mere site of him, and saw the choirs of angels lifting this new Messiah to heights mere mortals could not dare to attain. As Nancy Pelosi said, “He is God’s gift to America”. Before, this man assumes the role of President, wouldn’t it be prudent to examine how this man came to become our Forty-fourth President? This might in part explain why there is a feeling of optimism.
Obama’s campaign for presidency relied heavily on slogans that were vague, open ended, and carried no substance. “Change we can believe in.” and “Yes we can.” are cute slogans that could be used for football cheers. It gets the crowds going and excited. Combine that with the images that Obama is able to put people at ease, a sense of calmness that lowers the tensions in the room a couple of degrees. All reports glowingly spin the tales of Obama’s eloquence, style and grace. It can have a mesmerizing effect, if you get hooked. A constant theme among his supporters is that they like him, but do not know what his positions are. Based on little knowledge, voters decided to give this guy a chance. Why? It made them feel good.
There is a touch of racism that be an underlying current in Obama’s presidency. First, he has chosen to have himself identified with Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president who preserved the union. As all history books will tell you, Abraham Lincoln’s famous Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in the states he did not govern. With these two facts about the great 16th President, Obama has decided that Lincoln and he are similar in their personality and ideas of equality. Yes it is true that Lincoln did see the humanity in every human being, However, he did not see Whites and blacks as equal. It can be further argued that Lincoln, would have never considered socialist agenda such as the Pro-Choice or Healthcare. Lincoln saw the federal government’s role as a preserver of America not the caregiver.
Obama's very diverse background is also subject to the currency of racism. The topic of his religious beliefs, his radical associations, and his connection to Kenya were all taboo. The media would not touch it, nor would his supporters. When pundits on the right brought up concerns on these topics, they were labeled as racists. Geraldine Ferraro, a long time Democrat and former Vice-president candidate stated that the rise of Obama was due to his African-American heritage. For this, she was labeled a racist. If the media could recall anything in the past thirty years, and they don't because they rely solely on short term memories, they would find that Ms. Ferraro's record indicates that she is liberal but not a racist by any stretch of the imagination.
More importantly, Obama’s presidency as the first African-American is an indicator that we have gone beyond race in choosing leader. However, if his “blackness” is continuously pointed out becoming an invisible “political correctness” shield, which protects Obama from criticism. There will be a problem. Should this become a reality it will break down the myth that racism does not matter. It will also confirm some theories that Obama supporters voted for Obama because of his race. Not because of his policies. Sadly, it may divide the country that Lincoln tried so hard to preserve. It has the potential of permanent damage.
So why the happy mood for this week? Could it be that change sometimes is a good thing? Is it a good thing that in America, racism is dead topic? Could it be that the Bush Administration and the Republicans are not bitterly protesting Obama’s election? Could it be that people are really hoping that Obama carries through on his vague campaign promises? It is a combination of all these factors and a very important characteristics found only in America. As Americans, we are naturally optimistic. We look to the future with hope and faith. Obama tapped into that and in his pre-inagural speeches he spoke about the dream continuing to be alive and well. America’s better days are ahead and we shall prevail. Obama’s words are uplifting, but it his action that will be the true measure of how optimistic American will stay.
